December 2018 Theme Announcement
Announcing our December 2018 reading theme: Modern Slavery
Recommendations Moderator RA here! I am so thankful for the opportunity to explore the topic of modern slavery with you in December. Modern slavery includes human trafficking, and it refers to people being forced to work against their will, often with little or no pay, under threat of abuse and violence, with no chance for escape. Unfortunately, slavery was not abolished in the 19th century, and it thrives all over the world as a highly lucrative enterprise in industries including agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality, and the sex industry. Advocating against this human rights violation has been a passion for me for about five years. The more I learn about this injustice, the more I want to fight it! I hope that’s true for you, too. Thank you in advance for being open and willing to learn about this tough subject together through reading.
What are your recommendations (both fiction and nonfiction) on this topic? Share your suggestions in the comments! If you can, include the title and author, and even better, a Goodreads link. You can also send your ideas straight to me. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
If you’d like to take action against modern slavery and human trafficking, please consider supporting my project to raise awareness and funds through Dressember. Dressember is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to benefit anti-trafficking organizations all over the world. Every year, Dressember advocates wear a dress (or tie!) every day in December and then use that as a gateway to talk about the reality of modern slavery in our world. I’ve been an advocate since 2014, and it’s been such a fulfilling experience to speak up on behalf of the victims of human trafficking. Although the problem is huge and can seem overwhelming, we are NOT powerless against it. I’m a Dressember advocate because we can ALL make a difference in abolishing modern slavery.
